DRS CEO William Lynn: Defense Industry Must Manage Spending Slowdown - top government contractors - best government contracting event

The defense industry is faced with a dual challenge to help shape future warfare and manage slowdowns in federal spending, DRS Technologies CEO William Lynn said Wednesday.

National Defense Magazine reports Lynn addressed the U.S. Naval Institute 2012 Defense Forum, saying the U.S. accounts for nearly half of global defense spending.

Lynn joined DRS, a subsidiary of Italian conglomerate Finmeccanica, earlier this year as chief executive (click over to GovCon Wire for our coverage of the appointment).

He said that while purchases of new equipment go down during reduced spending cycles, research and development spending remains steady, according to Sandra Erwin’s report.

Lynn said the Pentagon’s areas of attention include weapons to fight non-state actors, fifth-generation stealth fighters, technology for countering improvised explosive devices and cyber warfare, the report said.

The U.S. needs to go further in developing offensive cyber weapons than adversaries, he said, according to Erwin’s story.
