Cisco and Netherlands-based electronics maker NXP Semiconductor have made a strategic investment in Australia-based networking firm Cohda Wireless for an undisclosed amount, NIS Magazine reports.
Jarrod White writes Cohda is building a network intended for cars to communicate safety information and connect to roadside sensor nodes using a cloud-based intelligence platform.
Andreas Mai, Cisco product management director for smart connected vehicles, Mai told the magazine are aiming to create a system where drivers would flip a switch upon reaching a crowded highway and the car would drive itself until the exit.
Cisco will license Cohda“™s software and NXP will license Cohda“™s firmware and IEEE 802.11p radio designs, the report said.
Mai also told the magazine she expects current adaptive cruise control systems to develop partial autonomy within two years.
