Lockheed Completes 2nd Navy MUOS Satellite for July Launch

LockheedLogoLockheed Martin has completed system testing on a U.S. Navy communications satellite scheduled for launch in July, the company said Wednesday.

The Mobile User Objective System will have five satellites in full operation by 2015 and the first satellite launched Feb. 24.

Last week, the company announced it completed a new software waveform for the constellation and ground control station (click here for our coverage).

Lockheed designed the constellation for mobile warfighters to have voice, video and data services that are similar to commercial smartphones.

In the spring, Lockheed will install the second satellite’s final spacecraft components and conduct a final factory confidence test before delivering the spacecraft to Cape Canaveral, Fla. for launch on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

Lockheed said each MUOS satellite will contain an ultra high frequency payload that is designed to be compatible with legacy terminals.
