Report: Iran Models Gunship Helicopter Off US AH-1

AH1Iran unveiled a new gunship helicopter Wednesday that aviation experts view as a copy of older U.S. and British designs, Wired reports.

David Axe writes the new helicopter also appears similar to older models from Russia, China and North Korea.

According to Wired, the Toufan 2 attack helicopter is modeled off the U.S. AH-1, used during the Vietnam War era and purchased by Iran in the 1970s.

Air Force Lt. Col. Dan Ward told Wired Iran is also flying updated versions of the F-4D Phantom Fighter and their pilots will fly them differently than a pilot with more experience.

Ward compared the situation to a swordsman that has never handled a sword before and said experience swordsman fear them more than those of lesser skill.

Iran claimed in September 2012 to have developed a new drone capable of reaching Israel.
