Report: Satellite Finds China's 1st Long-Range Transport Jet

TransportJetThe GeoEye 1 satellite and IKONOS spacecraft have taken pictures of a new jet believed to be China’s first long-range transport plane, Wired reports.

David Axe writes the Xian Aircraft Corp.-made Y-20 has not flown yet and requires new engines.

John Pike, an analyst for Globalstrategy.org, told Wired the Chinese are falling behind when it comes to jet transport technology.

Richard Aboulafia, an analyst for The Teal Group, told Wired only four companies make the type of engine the Y-20 needs and three of them are in the U.S.

The fourth company is in Russia, he said.

According to Wired, the Y-20 prototype reportedly has Russian-made D-30 engines and Russia has been hesitant to provide China engines.

The Chinese military is reportedly conducting runway taxi tests prior to the plane’s first flight.
