TCS Unveils 911 Text Messaging System

TCSlogoTeleCommunications Systems Inc. has developed a new system for citizens to send emergency information to 911 operators via text messages when audio communication is not available.

TCS said it developed the system to work with voice communication systems and to fulfill proposed Federal Communications Commission requirements for mobile carriers and some Internet-based text messaging applications to implement 911 text messaging technology.

Campus and public safety software provider Rave Mobile Safety worked with TCS to develop the Smart911 system, which Rave Mobile Safety holds the trademark of and TCS uses under license.

The company outlined potential uses of the system, such as transmitting images of missing children, viewing a medical profile of confused or disabled callers and communicating with deaf or hard-of-hearing callers.

TCS designed its Smart911 system for 911 operators access information on a patients’ medical profile, disabilities, photos, address details and other response data citizens create and maintain.

Operators store that information in an online database for first responders.

Public safety answering points access citizen emergency information through Smart911 upon receiving the message in a TCS-made cloud-based gateway, designed to work with both legacy and Next Generation 911 systems.

Smart911 also contains a geospatial information portal that provides first responders data on text senders.
