SiemensLogoSiemens AG has won a $134 million contract to upgrade two power plants as part of an initiative aimed at addressing increased energy demands in the country.

The German company will service, inspect and maintain the Western Mountain Gas Turbine Power Plant in Ruwais and the Khoms Steam Power Plant in Khoms, The North Africa Post reported Tuesday.

General Electricity Company of Libya awarded the contract to Siemens.

Siemens holds additional contracts for infrastructure projects in Libya such as a power transmission and distribution network and a TV center in Tripoli, the country’s capital.

Dietmar Siersdorfer, CEO of Siemens Energy for the Middle East, attended the contract signing ceremony and said the company wants to help support reconstruction of Libya’s infrastructure.

“Ensuring power plants continue to operate at their optimum is very important for the country“™s development,” he said.
