BoeingLogoBoeing has selected General Electric as engine partner for its development study on the next-generation 777 twin-engine jet airliner, according to a Boeing statement.

Bob Feldmann, Boeing Commercial Airplanes 777X development vice president and general manager said, “this decision to work with GE going forward reflects the best match to the development program, schedule and airplane performance.”

“We are studying airplane improvements that will extend today’s 777 efficiencies and reliability for the next two decades or longer, and the engines are a significant part of that effort, he added.

Feldmann said Boeing is also working with 777 customers worldwide during the 777x study.

Boeing said the new 777 models, expected to be released by the end of the decade will have improved fuel efficiency, wider range and enhanced passenger comfort.

According to the release, the next step for 777X may include offering the airplane to customers and eventual launch as a committed airplane program.
