DigitalGlobe Preparing for Post-GeoEye Merger Satellite Launch in 2014; Jeffrey Tarr Comments

Longmont, Colo.-based DigitalGlobe Inc. is working to complete its third WorldView-class satellite for a scheduled launch in mid-2014.

WorldView-3 is included in the company's EnhancedView contract with the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and is built to provide spectral diversity and multiple short-wave infrared bands for clear imaging through air-born particulates, DigitalGlobe said.

It will operate at an altitude of 617km, collecting up to 680,000 square kilometers per day.

As part of the project, the company plans to push through with a 2013 launch for GeoEye-2 so that it can be available as a ground spare or replacement for other on-orbit satellites.

“This plan reduces our risk profile and capital footprint,“ said Jeffrey R. Tarr, DigitalGlobe president and CEO, adding, “If demand exceeds our expectations, we will be well positioned to quickly expand our constellation.“

“GeoEye-2 and WorldView-3 are extraordinary satellites, and I want to thank all of our team members and partners for their continued efforts toward their completion,” Tarr said.

DigitalGlobe and GeoEye recently completed their $900 million cash-and-stock merger.
