Harris Corp. has received approval to begin rolling out a platform for the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to share electronic health records.
The company will deploy the service-oriented architecture system first in San Antonio, Texas and Hampton Roads, Va. before providing it to DoD and VA facilities worldwide, the company said Monday.
Harris won an $80 million contract in March 2012 to integrate both departments’ EHR systems and develop middle layer software.
Dr. Vishal Agrawal, president of Harris’ healthcare solutions business, said the company aims to help the departments share information on both active and retired service members.
Agrawal added the company also will help transition millions of service members from the military’s healthcare system to the VA’s system.
Harris intends for the SOA suite to integrate legacy data and help users exchange information without changing either source data or displays.
Upon deployment, the architecture will use commercial and open source technologies intended to help provide the departments applications and medical data.
