Lockheed Hands CBP 7th Orion Maritime Plane

LockheedLogoLockheed Martin has delivered a new P-3 Orion plane to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for the agency’s maritime patrol and reconnaissance operations.

CBP has flown the Orion for more than 6,500 flight hours and seized more than 117,000 pounds of drugs, worth around $8.7 billion, in missions involving the plane, Lockheed said Friday.

Orion planes are also used in hurricane reconnaissance, anti-piracy operations, humanitarian relief, search and rescue, intelligence gathering, antisubmarine warfare, air traffic control and humanitarian relief support.

For the mid-life upgrades program, Lockheed says installed a new metal alloy and added more than 20 years of operational use, intending to extend the Orion’s service life to around 15,000 hours.
