LGS Joins DARPA ISR Laser Tech Program

LGSlogoLGS Innovations has won a $4.1 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop laser technology intended to measure distance from a target by illuminating the target and analyzing backscattered light, Military & Aerospace Electronics reports.

John Keller writes DARPA wants the Laser Radar Technology program to develop light detection and ranging technology for military ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance).

DRS Technologies‘ RSTA business and Lockheed Martin also hold contracts under the LRT program (click over to GovCon Wire for more details).

Keller writes DARPA is focusing the program on detectors that operate in coherent detection mode along with direct-detection mode and developing sources for laser energy that support coherent and direct detection waveforms.
