Northrop Grumman has won a $15.3 million contract modification to upgrade a U.S. Navy maritime unmanned aerial vehicle’s operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7, Military Aerospace & Electronics reports.
John Keller writes the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent Naval Air Station, Md awarded the modification for the MQ-4C Triton‘s development and demonstration phase.
Triton is designed for 24-hour maritime surveillance missions, flies at altitudes of up to 10 miles and provides the Navy coverage for around 2,300 miles, Keller reports.
Keller write the Navy intends for Triton to work with the Navy’s P-8 Poseidon manned aircraft, built by Boeing and a variant of the company’s 737 passenger jet.
Northrop and the Navy recently completed Triton’s first test flight.
