Emerald Biofuels LLC, Fulcrum Brighton Biofuels LLC and Natures BioReserve LLC will draft proposals for new energy refineries under contracts totaling $16 million as the Defense Department seeks renewable energy sources, Bloomberg reported Saturday.

Nick Taborek writes the companies will compete for task orders to produce biofuels the Pentagon hopes will help operate military aircraft by 2016.

The government expects the project to attract potentially $17 million worth of investments from the contractors, Taborek reports.

Sharon Burke, assistant defense secretary for operational energy, told Bloomberg the Pentagon aims for the refineries to produce 150 million gallons of biofuel at costs of no more than $4 per gallon.
