Applied Communication Sciences has deployed mobile monitoring probes designed to help detect potential intrusions into smart grid and advanced metering infrastructure and distribution automation networks operations.
The global positioning system-enabled probes are fixed on utility vehicles to analyze field area network communication and capture locations, ACS said June 10.
The new offering is part of the company’s SecureSmart Managed Security Service, which aims to detect abnormal behavior in smart meters and DA devices, configuration errors and network problems.
Tony Bogovic, ACS group president for advanced consulting and engineering, said the probes work to help utilities gain situational awareness of smart meter networks and have real-time traffic views.
Each mobile probe includes GPS beacons and aim to reroute a nearby vehicle to service areas that experience problems.
ACS also designed the SecureSmart MSS probes with filtering and playback features that examine data and support security analysis, forensics, network operations and engineering and field diagnostics.
Utilities can also view the health of their AMI and DA services through a SecureSmart MSS desktop, according to ACS.
