Huntington Logo_ExecutiveBizA division of Huntington Ingalls Industries has supplied the U.S. Navy with the final two of four missile launchers it was commissioned to provide for the new DDG 1000 combat ship.

The aft peripheral vertical launch system assembly units, sent two weeks ahead of schedule, were designed to strengthen the Zumwalt-class Michael Monsoor destroyer’s survivability, HII said Wednesday.

The components were manufactured at Ingalls Shipbuilding’s facilities in Pascagoula and Gulfport, Miss.

The first two units of the aft PVLS were delivered in July 2012.

Steve Sloan, DDG 1000 program manager at Ingalls, said the company's shipbuilders worked to produce safe launchers in line with military requirements that address quality and reliability issues.

The PVLS was developed as an option to the conventional missile magazines on DDG 51-class vessels, according to HHI.

A unit of General Dynamics is building a hull for the DDG 1001 that is targeted for completion by early 2014.
