oceus networksOceus Networks has tested its 4G communications system on a balloon platform built by Space Data Corp. to determine whether an airborne LTE network can provide coverage to first responders.

During the experiment, the balloon containing Oceus’ Xiphos technology soared more than 70,000 feet into the air and transmitted signals within a 100-kilometer radius near Boulder, Colo., according to an Oceus release.

The trial is designed to support the U.S. Federal Communications Commission‘s aerial communications architecture project, which aims to explore backup resources during the first 72 hours of a disaster.

Motorola now offers its LEX700 smartphone and data modems for a nationwide public safety broadband network for LTE Band 14 devices, Oceus says.
