qinetiq-logoQinetiQ Group has collaborated with the U.K. Space Agency and Satellite Applications Catapult to update a satellite navigation system that emergency responders use to access secure satellite networks.

QinetiQ's technical support team installed and operated the Galileo Public Regulated Service test user receiver from its Malvern-based secure navigation laboratory to achieve an estimated 10-yard positioning accuracy mark, QinetiQ said Friday.

The PRS is designed to help British government departments address threats that aim to interrupt government functions and services.

Jeremy Ward, managing director of QinetiQ’s C4ISR division, said the company will work to develop more PRS products, services and applications.

QinetiQ and Belgian company Septentrio Satellite Navigation NV engineered the receiver, which helped achieve the live positioning on July 1 using PRS signals from Galileo's navigation satellites.

The demonstration aims to build on the first phase of a space agency pilot program for security, key management, PRS service delivery and PRS receivers for governmental and military usage.
