SatelliteAirForceGPSAerojet Rocketdyne has delivered the first batch of solar electric propulsion thrusters to Lockheed Martin for a spacecraft being jointly developed by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Lockheed will install the SEP thrusters and power conditioning components on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R series at NASA’s Stennis Space Center, Aerojet Rocketdyne said Tuesday.

Warren Boley Jr., Aerojet Rocketdyne president, said the thrusters are designed to help NASA and NOAA expand the weather satellite series.

The GOES-R satellite will work to provide images and atmospheric measurements of the Earth’s western hemisphere, monitor space weather and observe meteorological phenomena.

After final integration and evaluation at its facility near Denver, Lockheed will ship the satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida ahead of the scheduled launch in 2015.
