centurylink logoCenturyLink is receiving an additional $54 million from a U.S. Federal Communications Commissions program to deliver broadband Internet to rural and high-cost areas nationwide.

The firm will combine its own capital with the FCC Connect America Fund grant to provide rural businesses and households connection speeds of up to four megabits per second, CenturyLink said Tuesday.

“CenturyLink is investing millions of dollars to deploy broadband to thousands of Americans who live in areas that would be cost prohibitive to serve without programs like the FCC’s Connect America Fund,” said Steve Davis, CenturyLink executive vice president for public policy and government relations.

The company intends to deploy broadband service in 92,000 rural locations through CAF phase I, round 2.

Last year, CenturyLink used $35 million in CAF phase I, round 1 funding to help 45,000 homes and businesses connect to the Internet.

CenturyLink is deploying broadband to nearly 140,000 rural consumers and  businesses in 33 of the 37 states where it offers residential broadband service, according to the company statement.
