StethescopeonKeyboardCisco and Inmarsat have co-launched a new telecommunications service intended to help organizations provide healthcare support in remote areas and undeveloped communities.

The companies aim to help medical facilities and professionals interact with and take care of patients in locations with little-to-no telecommunications infrastructure, Inmarsat said Tuesday.

Inmarsat will equip Cisco“™s TelePresence VX Clinical Assistant with 3G technology that will work to facilitate real-time video conferencing and data transmission for clinicians to administer virtual check-ups, consultations and examinations.

Wael Abdulal, Cisco United Arab Emirates collaboration manager, said the companies intend to offer patients a remote care experience without the need to travel to a health facility.

Drew Brandy, Inmarsat industry vice president, said the service’s satellite-based network will aim to give doctors and healthcare professionals around the world a platform to exchange medical information and statistics.

Inmarsat says the International Telecommunications Union and World Health Organization have started to explore telemedicine with the goal of fighting non-communicable diseases.
