Harris Corp. has selected aircraft communications provider SITA to supply equipment for a digital air traffic control network that Harris is building for the Federal Aviation Administration under a $150 million project.

SITA will help Harris develop an integrated platform for ground station operations under the seven-year contract, SITA said Tuesday.

The FAA intends for its air traffic control centers to connect and exchange data with aircraft that utilizes SITA’s Future Air Navigation Systems technology.

John O’Sullivan, vice president of civil programs at Harris Government Communications Systems, said the companies are working to move the FAA away from voice communications for air traffic control to digital data connectivity through a very high frequency data link.

Harris will also install new VHF data link stations for the FAA’s NextGen network and replace SITA’s 330 existing air traffic control stations.

Both companies have worked together for more than 15 years to develop VHF data links.
