F35Lockheed Martin has awarded a three-year contract to Canada-based aerospace company Apex Industries to supply metallic components for the F-35 fighter jet’s forward fuselage and wing, the Hill Times reported Thursday.

Tim Naumetz writes 34 Canadian companies have won $500 million in contracts since the country joined the F-35 development program in 2002.

Canada joined seven other countries in signing a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. in 2006 to build and acquire the F-35 jets, Naumetz reports.

Naumetz writes Canada is scheduled to receive its first batch of four F-35s from the U.S. in 2017, with initial operating capability intended to start in 2021.
