Northrop, Lockheed Continue Air Force F-16 Radar Project; Skip Wagner Comments

F16FleetNorthrop Grumman is working with Lockheed Martin to upgrade radars for the U.S. Air Force‘s fleet of F-16 aircraft, aiming to extend the airplane’s lifespan beyond 2025.

Salable Agile Beam Radars contain mapping and auto-targeting features and are intended to upgrade the plane’s situational awareness, Northrop said Wednesday.

Skip Wagner, Northrop’s ISR and targeting systems division director of international business development and strategy, said SABR reuses 95 percent of fifth generation AESA modes.

Wagner added the radar contains electronic protection tools such as modes that are ported directly from the F-35’s AN/APG-81 radar.

He highlighted the radar system’s role in combat avionics programmed extension suite projects at the Air Force Association’s Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition held Wednesday in National Harbor, Md.

Northrop is also updating F-16 radars for Taiwan’s air force through its partnership with Lockheed.
