Cubic Transportation Systems has designed a new mobile platform for transit agencies to offer cloud-based services to their customers via an agency-branded mobile application.
The NextWave Mobile Business System works to help agencies use near field communication technology and turn a mobile phone into a fare card to allow for mobile fare purchases, Cubic said Monday.
NextWave is also intended to help agencies manage mobile fares and accounts, send travel conditions alerts to users and integrate of advertising and mobile marketing functions.
Cubic built the system to be compatible with iOS and Android smartphones and demonstrated Nextwave at the APTA Annual Meeting Monday in Chicago.
A Pew Research survey says more than 91 percent of adults have a cell phone and more than 58 percent of the devices are smartphones.
