robot northropNorthrop Grumman Corp. has developed an unmanned ground vehicle intended to help the U.S. Army cover troops during warfare, Breaking Defense reported Tuesday.

Sydney Freedberg Jr. writes the mobile armed dismount support system is designed to carry various weapon systems, including M240 machinegun, M-19 grenade launcher and 0.50 caliber M2 and operate under human control.

The Army has begun evaluation of the system for its Armed Unmanned Ground Vehicle program, according to the report.

Northrop Grumman also built the unarmed cargo-carrying vehicle CaMEL, which will join a robotics demonstration this week at the Army“™s Fort Benning, Ga.-based training facility,  Breaking Defense reports.

Both vehicles are designed to move at five miles per hour and haul supplies and weapons where other combat vehicles are unable to go.
