The APX-119 Identification Friend or Foe transponders are designed to help Army troops on the Surion helicopter identify allied forces, gain situational awareness and access civilian airspace, Raytheon said Sunday.

Glen Bassett, director of advanced communications and countermeasures in Raytheon’s space and airborne systems business unit, said the IFF system is intended to help fulfill the Republic of Korea's military and civil requirements for air, land and sea operations.

“We have also delivered APX-114 interrogators for maritime applications and our reduced size and weight mini IFF transponder to Korean Air Lines’ unmanned aerial systems,” Bassett added.

Military IFF systems work to detect friendly forces through a message transmitted by a ground or airborne interrogator that is designed to check range, heading and identification

Raytheon also built the civil IFF systems for aircraft identification and altitude and the company intends to incorporate GPS technology into future transponder response systems.
