F35The F-35 Joint Program Office has decided to focus its efforts to develop the jet’s helmet exclusively on a system being developed by Rockwell Collins and Elbit Systems.

Rockwell Collins ESA Vision Systems LLC, a joint venture of Rockwell Collins and Elbit System, aim to produce the Helmet Mounted Display Systems for the seventh batch of F-35 jets by 2016, Rockwell Collins announced Oct. 11.

Each of the third-generation helmets are being designed with night vision tools, crystal displays, automated alignment features and software updates.

“We appreciate the confidence and support of the F-35 Joint Program Office and Lockheed Martin leading to this decision,” said Bezhalel “Butzi” Machlis, Elbit Systems president and CEO.

F-35 pilots use the joint venture’s second-generation helmets, which are scheduled to receive an initial operational capability certification from the U.S. Marine Corps by July 2015.
