General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has awarded a $20.6 million follow-on production subcontract to Exelis to manufacture an airborne ejector rack an unmanned aerial vehicle GA-ASI manufactures for the U.S. Air Force.

Exelis will build more than BRU-71/A racks for General Atomics’ MQ-9 Reaper between November of this year and June 2015, Exelis said Tuesday.

Pete Martin, defense systems director for Exelis’ electronic attack and release systems business area, said the BRU-71/A is designed to be less than one-third of the weight of current carriage and release systems.

Poway, Calif.-based General Atomics first subcontracted Exelis in February 2011 for 208 ejector rack units.

The ejector racks are built with self-latching hooks and in-flight lock and work to use compressed air over electro-explosive charges in order to deploy payloads.
