HARRIS1Harris Corp. has won an R&D 100 Award for the development of a space radio with a NASA-led team.

The Melbourne, Fl.-based company helped develop the first space-qualified, software-defined radio operating in the Ka-band frequency range, according to a company statement.

“Jeff and Kevin, along with their NASA and Harris teammates, are to be commended for revolutionizing the development of new communications and networking technologies in space,” said Bill Gattle, vice president and general manager of national programs at Harris Government Communications Systems.

According to Harris, the R&D 100 Award is also known as the “Oscars of Innovation” and recognizes the 100 most technologically significant innovations in the U.S. during the past year.

The company worked with the NASA Glenn Research Center on the project.
