new-microsoft-logo_EMMicrosoft Research is developing miniature power plants that it plans to use in efforts to power more environmentally-friendly data centers in the future, Wired reported Tuesday.

Klint Finley writes the Redmond-based software company is using new miniaturization and fuel cell technology as it aims to halve the energy it takes to power a data center.

“Why this hasn“™t been done before is that the fuel cell technology has evolved to the point that the power efficiency that would normally need a large turbine can now fit in a rack,“ Sean James, a senior research program manager for Microsoft“™s Global Foundation Services, told the magazine.

“We“™ll need to work with regulating bodies to build something that is permitted and safe,“ he added

The proof of concept comprises of a methane fuel cell-powered server rack, according to the report.
