Ford Motor Co. has begun implementing a fresh Siemens-built software for navigating the automaker’s assembly plants worldwide in an effort to help employees collaborate and share insights.
The cloud-based IntoSite web application is built to display a three-dimensional simulation of manufacturing facilities for users to take virtual tours of Ford’s global plants using the Google Earth technology, Ford said Dec. 9.
Zvi Feuer, senior vice president of manufacturing engineering software at Siemens product lifecycle management software business, said the new technology is part of Siemens and Ford’s collaboration intended to address engineering and manufacturing requirements.
Engineers and other end users can upload videos, documents and images to pins in order to form a virtual workspace for storing and sharing information.
“The Siemens IntoSite software pilot is helping us explore the realm of possibility for future cross-regional workplace communication,” said John Fleming, Ford executive vice president of global manufacturing.
Siemens’ PLM software business unit developed the software and Ford is evaluating the IntoSite pilot program at its Wayne, Mich.-based assembly plant.
