Lockheed Martin has notified the Federal Aviation Administration that the company plans to produce a civil variant of its C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft.
The LM-100J variant plane is intended to leverage technology and design upgrades from the L-100 plane for other functions such as aerial firefighting and airborne medical patient transportation, Lockheed said Monday.
George Shultz, vice president and general manager for C-130 programs at Lockheed, said the company will perform certain design changes as it aims to produce the LM-100J as a civil multi-purpose air freighter.
Lockheed produced more than 100 L-100 planes between 1964 and 1992, with many of those airlifters still active for commercial and government entities.
