IBM will spend $1.2 billion to build a global network of cloud computing centers in an initiative aimed at expanding the company’s geographical footprint, CruxialCIO reported Friday.
Antone Gonsalves writes IBM intends to add 15 data centers this year and will focus on providing its SoftLayer cloud storage and networking technology to enterprise clients.
The IBM SoftLayer portfolio is comprised of software-as-a-service, platform-as-a-service and infrastructure-as-a-service offerings.
Gonsalves reports the company will build cloud computing hubs in Hong Kong, Washington, London and Toronto, among other capital markets.
A SoftLayer spokesman says the business aims to get closer to business clients and help them address any performance and realibility issues, according to Gonsalves.
