Lockheed Martin is preparing to integrate a liquefied natural gas tank into a propulsion system owned by Finland-based energy provider Wartsila for use in marine operations.

The 250,000-pound tank is built for installation in Harvey Gulf International Marine’s offshore LNG-fueled vessel that is being constructed in Gulfport, Miss. under a contract with Wartsila, Lockheed Martin said Monday.

Lockheed will use the technology designed to help produce NASA’s space shuttle external tanks to continue building LNG tanks for marine applications and land-based storage functions.

“We are constantly looking for ways to innovate and leverage proven advanced technologies in different industries and our first LNG tank is a great example of this synergy,” said Vinny Sica, a vice president at Lockheed’s information systems and global services business.

Lockheed built the tank at a NASA facility in Orleans, La.

Shane Guidry, Harvey Gulf chairman and CEO, said his company aims to help the U.S. become energy-independent through its partnership with Lockheed.
