Northrop Grumman has partnered with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University in Australia to study airworthiness requirements of unmanned aircraft systems and develop methods to meet those requirements.

“As a producer of large-scale unmanned aircraft systems, our goal is not only to provide the aircraft, but also to understand fully the Australian government’s needs to certify them for operation,” Ian Irving, chief executive of Northrop Grumman Australia, said Monday.

Reece Clothier, a deputy director at RMIT’s Sir Lawrence Wackett Aerospace Research Centre, said the partnership is also working with the Australian military under the program.

The Northrop-RMIT team is looking to certify UAS systems similar in size to small commercial aircraft for operations in any airspace environment.
