HHIHuntington Ingalls Industries has won a $23.5 million contract to develop an amphibious assault ship for the U.S. Navy in compliance with the service’s cost-saving plan.

Ingalls Shipbuilding division’s engineers and planners will work to design and construct the Navy’s amphibious assault ship LHA 8, Huntington Ingalls said Thursday.

Brian Cuccias, Ingalls Shipbuilding president, said the company intends for the contract to “implement cost-saving measures to help the Navy reach their affordability goals.”

“We are committed to building affordable ships, and this contract begins industry involvement in a meaningful way to implement improved cost in amphibious shipbuilding, specifically LHA 8,” Cuccias added.
