satellite airforceMaritime Solutions has introduced a new satellite antenna offering for customers to set up bandwidth services according to the requirements of end users, Maritime Global News reported June 19.

Greg Trauthwein writes the Harris CapRock Communications company teamed up with equipment manufacturers and invested in new technologies to develop the VSAT network architecture for bandwidth allocation.

Richard Simonian, president of Maritime Solutions, told the publication the company intends for the high-capacity VSAT offering to address the bandwidth requirements of clients in the shipping, service vessel, passenger and leisure markets.

Simonian noted a “continuing changeover from traditional MSS L-band service to always-on VSAT service” among shipping and supply vessel customers, according to the report.

Maritime Solutions launched the new offering at the recent Satellite 2014, the report says.

Simonian also told Maritime Global News that he believes legislative changes to the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 will increase bandwidth requirements.

“The requirements for ECIDIS, paperless charts, electronic manifests, and ship tracking will similarly increase not only the bandwidth consumed by each ship but also the need for a highly available service rather than a “best effort” delivery that some vessels currently experience,” he said.
