Software AGRobert Rowe, a product marketing manager at Software AG, has discussed in a blog article how interconnected devices and home appliances work to exchange information under a common umbrella called the Internet of Things.

He wrote Friday that sensors, radio-frequency identification, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, IPv6 and Representational State Transfer application programming interfaces are some of the enabling technologies for IoT.

“Using REST APIs are a very common method of connecting devices to the Internet because they are built on a generic interface using the standard HTTP methods GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, PATCH, etc.,” Rowe says.

Sensors work to send information such as location, weather, temperature and movement to an appropriate device, according to Rowe.

He cited as an example the smart scales for measuring a human’s weight, body composition and heart rate.

“You simply download the associated app and pair the scale with your Wi-Fi network or smartphone using Bluetooth technology,” Rowe writes.

Healthcare providers could integrate those pieces of information from various devices in order to provide health status updates to customers, according to Rowe.
