FireEye has released a new report that indicates the Russian government may have sponsored cyber attacks targeting governments worldwide.
The report examines the activities of APT28, a group of Russian-speaking developers and operators FireEye believes to have collected intelligence data from the Republic of Georgia, Eastern European governments and European security organizations, FireEye said Tuesday.
“FireEye’s latest advance persistent threat report sheds light on cyber espionage operations that we assess to be most likely sponsored by the Russian government, long believed to be a leader among major nations in performing sophisticated network attacks,” said Dan McWhorter, FireEye vice president of threat intelligence.
Moscow-based APT28 has launched advanced persistent threats against governments, militaries and security organizations since 2007, the report says.
FireEye says the group appears to have adopted sophisticated coding practices in order to evolve its reverse engineering techniques.
