3DRadar_AFSaab‘s defense and security business will provide Raytheon with hardware and software development support for the latter firm’s Three Dimensional Expeditionary Long Range Radar contract with the U.S. Air Force.

Erik Smith, vice president and general manager of the Saab Defense and Security sensor systems segment, said Thursday that the company wants the technology supply contract to generate high-tech jobs at its facility in central New York.

3DELRR will be intended to help the Air Force with air surveillance functions in order to identify and track threats such as ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft, Saab said.

The service awarded Raytheon the prime contract to build the radar earlier this month.

Dynetics will also provide Raytheon with hardware development support alongside Saab as another subcontractor for the 3DELRR program.
