SGI CorpSGI will provide its high-performance computing products to support the climate research and analysis activities of NASA‘s Center for Climate Simulation at Goddard Space Flight Center.

The company said Monday NCCS has replaced some portions of its Discover supercomputer with SGI Rackable clusters to process weather and climate simulation data at a speed of 1.9 petaflops.

“In just a couple years we have seen the science industry explode with data, enabling groundbreaking insights we couldn’t imagine before,” said Jorge Titinger, SGI president and CEO.

“High-performance computing is a fundamental part of ensuring researchers have the tools to access all the data at their fingertips.”

Daniel Duffy, HPC lead at NCCS, noted that the center aims to achieve higher-fidelity data analysis and simulations through the use of SGI computing technology.

SGI Rackable features an Intel Xeon E5-2696 v3 processor and Mellanox fat tree FDR fabric that work to help boost accuracy of research findings and interconnect with the SGI Rackable Scalable Unit, SGI said.
