Boeing has confirmed that the second satellite built for Inmarsat is operating in orbit hours after the spacecraft was launched.

The Inmarsat-5 satellite took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan onboard an International Launch Services Proton Breeze M rocket, Boeing said Sunday.

Mark Spiwak, president of Boeing Satellite Systems International, said the satellite is designed to provide mobile broadband service to commercial and government customers worldwide.

The satellite is set to operate for Inmarsat after completing the tests and additional maneuvers.

Boeing’s commercial satellite services is also under contract with Inmarsat to provide L- and Ka-band payload capacity and managed services to government clients.
