Carl Smith, Northrop Grumman - ExecutiveBizNorthrop Grumman will install an infrared missile protection system in the Canadian air force’s CH-147F Chinook fleet.

The IR countermeasures platform is designed to detect a missile launch, determine its threat level and destroy the missile, the company said Wednesday.

The system has been in service to the warfighter for five decades and “will give the Royal Canadian Air Force the ability to provide advanced protection against growing threats,” said Carl Smith, vice president of IR countermeasures at Northrop Grumman.

Northrop and partner Selex ES developed the technology with more than 3,250 pointer/trackers built into the system.

The IR missile protection is installed in various large fixed-wing transports and rotary-wing platforms worldwide.
