sonarMaritime Way Scientific has received funding from Lockheed Martin Canada Mission Systems & Training to develop an underwater warfare system dubbed SPARTA.

The Sonar Performance-Acoustic Research-Tactical Analysis system aims to assist naval forces to detect enemy threats by determining underwater environment through ocean acoustic modelling technology, Maritime Way said Wednesday.

Martin Taillefer, Maritime Way president and managing director, said operational environment could have an impact on the security and capability of underwater warfare systems.

“Without a clear understanding of the environment, the vulnerability of any unit is increased considerably,” he added.

Rosemary Chapdelaine, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Canada Mission Systems & Training, said, “This project represents a continued investment in naval combat management technologies to serve the needs of Canada and allied navies around the world.”
