research-and-development-RDMalloy Aeronautics has entered into a deal with the Defense Department to develop a hoverbike prototype in collaboration with defense research and development firm Survice, Reuters reported Monday.

Jim Drury writes development work under the project to take place in Maryland.

The hoverbike system will work to perform search and rescue operations, first-responder emergency services and cargo insertion missions, according to the report.

“With adducted rotors you immediately not only protect people and property if you were to bump into them, but if you ever were to bump into somebody or property it’s going to bring the aircraft out of the air,“ Grant Stapleton, Malloy’s marketing and sales director, told Reuters.

The hoverbike features a humanoid figure equipped with head-mounted mini-camera, offset and overlapping rotor blades and guards around the rotor blades, Drury reports.
