ThalesThales Defense & Security has secured a two-year, $18.4 million contract to develop and install instrument landing systems at several airfields of the U.S. Air Force.

ILS is a ground-based system designed to improve safety of airport landings by guiding the aircraft as it approaches the runway under limited visibility conditions.

The firm-fixed-price contract also covers the provision of production representative systems for the ILS, technical manuals, training support, spares and assistance to carry out an operational and qualification test of the system, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

Thales Defense & Security will perform work in Overland Park, Kansas; Clarksburg, Maryland; and Italy through July 15, 2018.NewAirForceLogo

The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center is obligating $17,284,246 from the service branch's fiscal 2014 procurement funds.
