WoolpertWoolpert has been awarded a contract to assess the capability of light detection and ranging sensor platforms to support the U.S. Geological Survey’s 3D Elevation Program.

The lidar sensor technology has “the ability to fly at higher altitudes while acquiring data at an increased point density,” John Gerhard, project director at Woolpert, said Thursday.

The contract calls for the geospatial and engineering firm to carry out an accuracy analysis, craft data products and submit a report to the USGS regarding lidar by yearend.

The agency’s 3DEP intends to generate topographic data designed for use in the management of flood risks, infrastructure and natural resources, precision agriculture and hazard mitigation.
