Ian Graham, general counsel of BAE Systems‘ U.S. subsidiary, believes that an organization must incorporate discipline into its efforts to retain a diverse team of legal professionals, Bloomberg BNA reported Thursday.

Graham, who also serves as a senior vice president and corporate secretary at BAE Systems Inc., told the audience during a panel discussion hosted by Bloomberg BNA that he works to ensure that diversity is a key part of the company’s recruitment process.

“And if it’s not, you have to take a step back and ask, why not?” Graham added.

The Bloomberg BNA event was held Thursday in Manhattan.
