Lockheed parking lot solar arrayLockheed Martin has powered up the solar array over the parking lot of its facility in Florida in support of efforts to achieve energy efficiency as a 12,000-employee industrial company in the state.

The company said Tuesday the project covers an area of 151,400 square feet and is the largest private solar array in Florida.

“It is a building block in our larger effort to align our company with the demands of this century: global security, advanced infrastructure and renewable energy,” added Leo Mackay, vice president of sustainability at Lockheed.

The company aims to achieve $6.5 million in cost savings over 25 years through the array’s estimated 3.33 million kilowatt hours of generated power per year, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent.

Advanced Green Technologies served as lead contractor on the solar project, while Hanwha SolarOne Company provided the solar modules and SunGrow supplied the inverters.

The team broke ground in March and completed the project last month, Lockheed said.
